Trigram Robot SUMO wird in einem Teamformat durchgeführt, wobei jedes Team aus 2 teilnehmenden Schülern und 1-2 coachenden Lehrern besteht. Es gibt zwei Kategorien: Grundschule und Sekundarschule. Die teilnehmenden Schülerinnen und Schüler müssen am Tag des Wettbewerbs bereits in der Grund- oder Sekundarschule eingeschrieben sein. Die Wettkampfarena ist eine kreisrunde Plattform mit einem Durchmesser von 2,8 Metern. Die Plattform befindet sich etwa 35 Zentimeter über dem Boden, der Startbereich des Roboters ist trapezförmig und befindet sich 50 Zentimeter vom Rand entfernt. Der Bereich innerhalb der Vorbereitungslinie bis zum Rand der Plattform ist der Startbereich für die Roboter, wobei sich die Roboter jedes Teams in diesem Bereich gegenüberliegen.
